Yumi and Louis: A Hawaiian Proposal

Yumi says that she and Louis do “everything backwards but exactly right.” From ring-shopping before their proposal with their little girl in tow to Louis proposing to Yumi before he even had the ring, each detail of their love story and proposal is unique and special to their one-of-a-kind, captivating relationship.

“I thought it was love at first sight,” Yumi says of the night she first met Louis at a crowded nightlife event, “but Louis has no recollection of this!” Both of them knew of one another because they work for the same company, Yumi as a dancer, Louis as a UFC fighter. Later, the two met by chance, and the rest is history!

“I always pictured what a proposal would feel like,” Yumi says, “But this was much more than how it is in the movies.” On the eve of Yumi’s 26th birthday, Louis asked what she wanted, and she replied jewelry, “just something simple.” Louis said he wanted to get her a ring, and she said no because they weren’t getting married. He said, “Babe, c’mon, you’re already my wife. Let’s get you a ring.”

“I had just gotten out of the shower, and I was in my PJs!” Yumi says. “No makeup, wet hair, granny glasses … and he asked me, on one knee, with no ring, to be his forever. It might seem backwards to some people, but it was exactly right to me.”

They went together with their beautiful daughter, Lucy-Sunshine, to The Wedding Ring Shop, and with the help of Lorah Ashley, they found the ring of Yumi’s dreams. Of her pear-shaped ring from our Carmella Collection, Yumi says, “I chose it because I am a fighter’s wife. It means blood, sweat, and tears from both of us. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of how tough and beautiful our love is. Like a diamond.”
